VOPAK Terminal Durban & Transnet Pipelines (TPL) aim to incorporate a joint venture that will develop, construct and operate a new Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Richards Bay. This proposed new LNG terminal will provide LNG receiving, storage, marine bunkering, truck loading, regasification and gas transmission pipeline services to customers over the long term.
The proposed LNG terminal plans to serve the South African market with an LNG import solution to help provide energy security and accelerate the decarbonisation journey in two phases. Projected Phase 1 is currently planned for a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) of at least 135,000m³ and an onshore regasification system with an indicative capacity of 2 MTPA (~300 mmscfd). The planning basis is targeting the expected Commercial Operations Date (COD) to be in 2027. Projected Phase 2 is currently planned for planning for an onshore LNG tank with an indicative capacity of 200,000m³. The onshore tank will potentially replace the FSU and provide additional regas capacity to increase the total capacity up to 5 MTPA/~750 mmscfd. Aligning the COD to customers’ requirements means it could be as early as 2030.
