KZN company adds polish to new Tanzania airport terminal

Home Engineering Engineers, Consulting Engineers & Project Management KZN company adds polish to new Tanzania airport terminal

TECHNICAL Finishes KZN was the principal supplier in one of the biggest Polyscreed Epoxy terrazzo flooring projects at the new terminal for the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The airport, named after Tanzania’s first democratic president, is located 12km from the city centre. The new airport terminal is expected to receive six million passengers a year, making it the country’s busiest airport.

Over 35 000m² of Polyscreed Terrazzo was applied to all public flooring areas throughout the terminal.

According to Technical Finishes KZN Managing Director Ian Harrison, this heavy-duty screed topping is a unique exposed aggregate epoxy flooring system which delivers the benefits of industrial durability together with decorative elegance.

“The beauty of this system is the ability to choose custom select background colours to suit the needs of every architect, designer or customer. This results in a long-term flooring system that offers exceptional abrasion resistance and other physical aggression,” he said.

The project was designed by NARCO architects of the Netherlands and executed by BAM International with Arab Consulting Engineers (ACE) of Egypt as project consultant.

“What makes terminal 3’s floors exclusive is the complex design of the terrazzo floor. For this specific project, the client required different patterns, various colours and multiple interfaces. While the work environment was challenging due to logistics, climate and labour, Technical Finishes’ support given to the team of applicators ensured that the project was executed on time and within budget,” Harrison said.

Clive McCabe from BAM International said, “Technical Finishes worked alongside the client and project team to deliver a world-class solution. They were always able to help us find solutions to meet our specific requirements. The products were timeously manufactured, even in demanding circumstances. Quality was extremely important for us and Technical Finishes delivered an outstanding product of international standard that has been well received by the client”.

Technical Finishes specialises in seamless industrial and commercial flooring solutions. The company has three fully equipped manufacturing units based in Gauteng, Western Cape (which are fully ISO 9001 certified) and KwaZulu-Natal.
