SIGNIFICANT progress has been made in the Alkanstrand Beach refurbishment project, a key initiative aiming to protect one of Richards Bay’s coastal landmarks from erosion, according to Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).
TNPA said in early December that Port of Richards Bay teams had transported rocks from the South Dunes precinct and have placed them at the base of geo-sandbags along the shoreline. This temporary barrier offers immediate protection to vital beach facilities, including the lifeguard structure, which was previously at serious risk of collapse.
Dennis Mqadi, port manager at the Port of Richards Bay said, “We are proud of the strides made in restoring Alkanstrand Beach. While critical milestones have been achieved, work continues with dredging and sand replenishment to ensure the beach is ready for the festive season.”
The final phase of the project will soon begin, focusing on reshaping and reinforcing the shoreline through continued dredging, sand replenishment, and the construction of a coffer dam to manage dredged materials, supported by imported sand to enhance beach stability.
With this strengthened shoreline, TNPA said it is committed to preserving the natural beauty and resources of the region, fostering a coastal environment that future generations can enjoy.
