ON Monday 8 July, the eThekwini Municipality issued an advisory to residents in Malvern, Hillary, Flamboyant Park, Escombe, Shallcross, Kharwastan and nearby areas regarding smoke from a fire at the Waste Plan premises in Queensmead. The city’s fire and emergency services managed the situation and cautioned residents to close all windows and doors and cover vents with damp cloths until the smoke dissipated.
The city said that emergency teams, environmental health practitioners, and air quality specialists were working swiftly to mitigate the impact on air quality in the affected areas.
According to a report on IOL posted on Wednesday, two businesses in the Queensmead industrial park in Queensburgh, a recycling plant on Munroe Road, and an auto body repair shop on Piet Retief Road, were gutted in the fire on Monday.
