AS part of efforts to promote and improve terminal security and the safe keeping of customer cargo within its premises, Transnet’s Durban Port Terminals have introduced the driver and truck management system (DTMS).
Customers have started registering their drivers and trucking companies on the terminals’ electronic database which has replaced the current manual security verification. DTMS will ensure that the driver and truck allocated to either drop off or pick up goods at the terminals matches what the system advises, including the driver’s biometric validation. Customers now have an opportunity to manage profiles if a different driver or truck is allocated that day. The system is also designed to ensure that the security checks are completed and passed before the terminals’ entry and exit.
The launch of the system has included the training of in-house security personnel, information and communication technology support personnel as well as contract security – on the use of the various components of the system.
According to Transnet Port Terminals, the accuracy of records of all trucks and drivers calling the terminals may be the biggest benefit in the event there are investigations of incidents within the terminal environment. The registration platform is https://dtms.transnet.net/ for companies contracted to collect or deliver cargo at the Durban Terminals.
Durban Terminals are part of a network of 16 sea cargo and 3 inland terminals managed by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), a division of Transnet SOC Ltd and the country’s leading terminal operator responsible for loading and offloading cargo aboard vessels calling the seven SA ports. The company provides import and export services for both domestic and global markets through a staff of 9,000. Current plans are focused on geographic expansion, service innovation and diversification as the business transitions into a logistic solutions provider.
